7 Signs You’re Burning Out (And Not Just Tired)

Exhaustion is only one part of the picture. Here are some of the signs that can show up when stress and pressure have been building for too long.

We all get tired. Sometimes life is busy, work is relentless and all you really need is a decent night’s sleep and a weekend where nobody asks anything of you.

But burnout can feel different.

You rest, but you still feel drained. Things that you once managed without thinking suddenly feel like hard work. Your patience disappears. Your motivation drops.

And sometimes you don’t even realise how exhausted you’ve become because you’ve spent so long telling yourself to keep going.

1. You’re tired even when you’ve rested

One of the most noticeable signs of burnout can be persistent exhaustion. This is not simply feeling tired after a long day. You may wake up already thinking about when you can get back into bed.

Rest matters. However, when the pressure causing your exhaustion has not changed, a quiet weekend may not feel like enough.

2. Everything feels like effort

Emails. Cooking dinner. Returning a message. Making a decision.

Tasks that would normally be manageable can start to feel disproportionately difficult. You may find yourself constantly thinking, I just haven’t got the energy for this.

3. You’ve become more irritable

Burnout does not always look like someone completely falling apart. Sometimes it looks like having absolutely no patience left.

Small inconveniences irritate you. Noise bothers you. People asking questions feels overwhelming. Your capacity may simply be stretched too thin.

4. You’re struggling to concentrate

You read the same paragraph three times. You walk into a room and forget why you are there. You open your laptop and stare at your workload without knowing where to begin.

Difficulty concentrating can happen for many reasons, so it should not automatically be labelled burnout. However, alongside prolonged pressure and exhaustion, it is worth paying attention to.

5. You’ve stopped caring as much

You might once have cared deeply about your work. Now you are doing what you need to do to get through the day.

That does not necessarily mean you have suddenly become lazy or unmotivated. It may be a sign that you have very little energy left to give.

6. You’re withdrawing from people

When you are running on empty, even enjoyable plans can feel like another demand. You cancel. You stop replying. You want to be left alone.

Occasionally wanting space is normal. But if withdrawing has become your default, ask yourself what has changed.

7. You keep telling yourself to push through

Sometimes the clearest warning sign is not how tired we are. It is how determined we are to ignore it.

Resilience is not about proving how much pressure you can withstand. Real resilience also means recognising when something needs to change.

If several of these signs feel familiar, you do not need to solve your entire life today. Start by asking a simpler question: What is draining me most right now, and what could make that load slightly lighter?

That question can be the beginning of burnout recovery.
