Why Am I So Tired All the Time? Understanding Deep Fatigue

When coffee and a weekend lie-in don’t seem to make much difference, it may be time to look at what else could be contributing to how exhausted you feel.

You sleep.

You wake up tired.

You drink coffee.

You are still tired.

You promise yourself you will have an early night. Then tomorrow arrives and somehow you are just as exhausted.

If you have found yourself searching “why am I so tired all the time?”, you are definitely not alone.

There are many possible reasons for persistent tiredness, including health conditions, medication, sleep problems and lifestyle factors. If your tiredness is persistent, unexplained or worrying you, it is important to speak to a healthcare professional.

But there is another question worth asking too: How much are you carrying?

Rest and recovery are not always the same thing

You can spend Sunday on the sofa while mentally running through Monday’s workload.

You can take annual leave while checking emails.

You can go to bed while replaying conversations, responsibilities and everything you did not finish that day.

Technically, you have stopped working. But have you actually switched off?

Look at your energy, not only your diary

Burnout recovery is not simply about finding more hours in which to do nothing. It can also involve understanding where your energy is going.

Perhaps it is a workload that never seems finished. Maybe you are constantly available to everyone. Perhaps you are saying yes when you desperately want to say no.

Or you may be carrying responsibilities that nobody else even notices.

These things add up.

Being resilient does not mean being endlessly available

There is a dangerous version of resilience that sounds like this:

Keep going.

Push through.

Other people cope.

Do not let anyone down.

But sustainable resilience is not about having unlimited capacity. Nobody does.

Sometimes the resilient choice is recognising that your current pace cannot continue indefinitely.

Try a simple energy audit

Take ten minutes and write down everything currently demanding something from you.

  • Work
  • Family
  • Relationships
  • Finances
  • Household responsibilities
  • Unfinished tasks
  • Commitments you have agreed to

Then ask yourself:

What gives me energy?

What drains it?

What genuinely needs me?

What could change?

You may not be able to remove the biggest pressures immediately. That is okay.

Start small. Burnout recovery does not have to begin with a dramatic life overhaul. It can begin with understanding why you are running on empty in the first place.

Note: This article is for general information and self-reflection. If tiredness, distress or changes in how you feel are persistent or worrying, consider speaking with a qualified healthcare professional.
